Labels: 506 Joven Catalana, 507 Joven Catalan. Of the Autonomous Community of CataluƱa. The catalanas wear their hair in snoods (hairnets) and wear fishnet fingerless gloves. Labels: 508 Joven Canaria, 509 Joven Canario This trio represents the Canary Islands in general according to their Marin labels. The Canario wears the typical dress of a camel driver. It is a variant of the Granada fandangos. It was originally danceable, but now has lost its rhythm, is much slower, and is usually only sung or played as a guitar solo, reflecting its Arab-Moorish heritage more strongly than other fandangos. granadino (m.) and granadina (f.)

This is a bespoke dressed doll and is not numbered or catalogued in Series 5. A red bandanna added to a former 'marinero'. Pamplona is the capital city of the Chartered Community of Navarra, and of the former Kingdom of Navarra. The city is famous for its Running of the Bulls, an annual feature of the Festival of San Fermƭn. The red scarf is a distinctive element of the festival and tradition says that you only wear it on your neck while the festival lasts. PamplonƩs (Person from Pamplona)

La Cobijada de Vejer. Marin only made this doll in Series 0. This is a replica not an original, using a Series 5 model. Vejer de la Frontera is a town in the province of CƔdiz, Andalucia. The Cobija (Blanket) covered her face with a black mantle & skirt, so that only her left eye was visible. Believed to be an old Castilian tradition, women would dress this way to protect themselves from the sun. Now it is only used for festivities. Vejeriega/o (female/male from Vejer De La Frontera)

Tropicana (Ref. No. unknown) This Cubana is dressed in a Bata Cubana, worn for performance on stage or cabaret. It may be why this model is named after the famous Tropicana Nightclub in Havana, Cuba. It brings together influences from Spanish, French, and African culture and dress, combining theatre, fiesta, and the spectacle of carnival with slave and gypsy dress. The Rumba was a dance that originated among the African slaves in Cuba in the sixteenth century. Cubana/o (female/male from Cuba)

Label: 576 Greigo Representing Greece, this traditional male costume consists of a felt embroidered waistcoat, a stiff white kilt (fustanella), shirt, cloth belt, fez, knee bands (gonatoures), elastic trousers and shoes with pompoms (tsarouchia).

Label: 577 Chilena Representing Chile, this Chilena wears a huasa or cueca dress. characterized by a tight, cinched-in waist and a wide, full skirt which falls just below the knees. Many such dresses include a sash around the waist and incorporate a floral pattern.

Label: 578 Chileno Representing Chile, this Chileno is dressed as a 'huaso' - a Chilean cowboy. He wears a chupalla (horseman's hat), a chamanto - a reversible poncho, made from either wool or silk with a ribbon finish, and knee-high boots with espuelas (spurs). He is playing a GuitarrĆ³n Chileno - a plucked string instrument.

Argentina is one of the most important wine-producing countries in the world, and the largest producer of wine in South America. Labels: 581 Israeli, 582 Israelita. Represrenting Israel and specifically the jewish faith. The Israelita sits behind two lit shabbat candles. Traditionally, after lighting the candles, the woman moves her hands over the candles and towards her (as if bringing in or guiding in the Sabbath). The Israeli has payot or sidelocks and wears a shtreimel or black fur hat and a tallit or prayer shawl.

PuertorriqueƱo & PuertorriqueƱa (From the 400 Series. Ref. Nos. unknown) The field hand wields his machete, ready to harvest the giant US owned sugar cane plantations. The seƱorita is missing her basket of produce. Until 1898 the island had been a Spanish colony for 400 years. The indigenous people are the Taino who called the island BoriquƩn. The women typically wear a manila shawl and the men, checkered clothing including a 'parpusa' or peaked cap. Label: 462 Maja de CƔdiz (From the 400 series) Representing CƔdiz, the capital of the province of CƔdiz, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. Maja (fem.) or majo (masc.) were people from the lower classes of Spanish society who distinguished themselves by their elaborate outfits and sense of style in dress and manners, as well as by their cheeky behaviour. Label: 463 Chiclanera (From the 400 series) Representing the town and municipality of Chiclana de la Frontera, in the province of CƔdiz, in the Autonomous Community of Andalucia. Chiclana de la Frontera is noted for its wineries, and is also of course the home of the Marƭn Dolls Museum-Factory founded in 1928 where there's a life size model of this particular doll. Label: 483 Vivitos y Coleando (Alive & Kicking) These fishmongers represent a traditional figure of MƔlaga, the "Cenachero" or Fish Vendor. El Cenachero sold fish on the streets while balancing the two esparto baskets they carried. These baskets are called "cenachos" in Spanish, hence the name. The cenachos were handmade of esparto. Generally, Cenacheros sold anchovies, but also traded in mackerel, sardines & whitebait. They traditionally wear sashes and brimmed sunhats.

Label: 664 Tropicana (From the 600 Series). This Cubana is dressed to rumba! Her 'bata cubana' consists of a long trailing flouncy skirt cut low on her hips, a bustier with large ruffled cap sleeves and a huge bow in her hair. She totes a large white scarf as a dancing aid.
